Facilities Management
Here at Active, we provide innovative
workplace solutions to a wide range of clients – regardless of their
size, industry or particular requirements. Whether it's designing and
building offices, relocating firms to new homes or providing storage for
excess furniture, our service encompasses all aspects of the workplace.
All this is perfectly demonstrated by the
facilities
management service we
provide to the Royal Academy of Music (RAM). Over the years, Active have
worked with RAM on spaceplanning, relocations, various refurbishments and
dilapidations. Our FM support has included placing people for short-term
projects, helpdesk and reactivecall-outs.
The Royal Academy of Music is one of the world's oldest and
most well-respected conservatories. The estate comprises of 4 buildings, with
the main building being an imposing listed property built in 1911, with more
than 125 rooms. Di Thorpe (Head of Estates at RAM) first encountered Active at
her previous role with the Hearst Group.
Founded in 1822, the Royal Academy of Music is one of the world's oldest and
well-respected conservatoires, with its alumni including Sir Elton John, Dame Evelyn
Glennie, Katherine Jenkins OBE, and SirSimon Rattle. Located in the heart of Piccadilly
in Central London, the Academy serves over 1,000 students and is laid out on an estate
containing multiple buildings.
Since early 2019 Active has been on site helping rationalise the
estate to make better use of the space, and to create new and refurbished teaching
and practice spaces which are always in high demand. The estate comprises four
buildings with the main building being an imposing listed property built in 1911
with 5 floors and more than 125 teaching and practice rooms.
In 2020, we closed one satellite building, relocated
resources to the main building and carried out the dilapidations ready for handover
to the Landlord. RAM's Head of Estates, says 'We are a relatively small Estates
department and we run lean and mean. It is important for our Senior Management
Team that we listen, understand, and deliver. Active also listens, understands
and delivers.'
Most recently, from January 2022, Active are
providing interim FM cover by putting a Facilities Manager and other resources in
place whilst a recruitment drive takes place.
Much of the funding of RAM's building projects
coming from generous donors, with that comes and high level of financial governance.
As with all our projects, we operate a transparent cost model which ensures every
pound is accounted for and best value delivered. We are looking forward to
continuing our relationship with RAM, helping them to create fantastic environments
to get the best from their students and staff.
Every organisation will rely on a variety of functions and services to provide support to its core business operations – facility management ensures that the right support is available at the right quality and the right cost. At its core, a facilities management company will oversee everything that keeps an organisation running.
Facilities management is important because it ensures a safe and comfortable work environment for employees and students.
Any good working environment should be shaped
around the people who work there – making them feel well, energised,
productive and enthusiastic about their work. It should make students want to
come to learn, perform and grow once they're there – ideal for students at one
of the world's most prestigious music academies.
Active has worked with the RAM for the past 12 months, during this
time it's portfolio of services is as diverse as it is broad. At Active, we wok in
partnership and our tram is very much seen as part of the Academy's support
infrastructure. No task is too big nor too small. We are reactive and
proactive!
Everything from refurbishment of Master Classrooms, to space planning and utilisation, to feasibility studies to turn 3 academy concert halls into future-proofed tech laden spaces where recording and streaming of performances can take place. To crafting sash secondary glazing in keeping with its Grade II listing to minimise the noise bleed from the Marylebone Road, and most recently a 100K refurbishment of a 2-bed Flat on their York Gate footprint.
Di Thorpe, Head of Estates appreciates that she has one point of contact, no matter
what the ask. Di has limited access and looks to active to provide an all-round
support package. Active forges long lasting working relationships through mutual
understanding and trust.

"We have an ambition for the Royal Academy of Music to be the best conservatoire in the world. With that in mind I want to do my projects once, do them right first time, and do them properly. Active does fantastic work in supporting me to do this"
